Sharing all the quirky little things that, for better or worse, make Aspies who they are.

Happy 2012 from Asperger Things! New posts today.

Happy 2012!

Your admin has been extremely busy the past couple days – we hosted a big New Years Eve party, and then we hosted a big New Years Day party, and I was (of course) put in charge of all the kids that were dragged along with their parents. Not that that’s a bad thing (I think kids are much better party guests than adults), but it sure does sap your energy.

Today is the first day I’ve really had to get at my online to-do list, so I promise that I will queue more Asperger Things posts today. Thanks for being faithful and waiting out the inactivity period, everyone. =P

The suggestion box is always open: http://aspergerthings.tumblr.com/submit

Thanks!

More AS Things coming very soon.

Gimme a bit of a break, it’s the holidays. I have family and friends and over 50 cards to send and campers to see and a home theater to finish and a big New Years party to prepare for and lots of other things. =P

Hi Dylan. Do you actually have aspergers syndrome? I don't know if I should ask someone if I should get diagnosed, but I've read about so many, I guess "symptoms" that I've been thinking about whether I have it or not. Sometimes the official symptoms seem to apply directly to me and sometimes i notice them actually happening. I don't know if it's just my personality or if I actually have it. At the moment I am 15 yars old and I really don't know what to do. Any advice?

Emily,

I am professionally diagnosed with AS, as well as a few other things that we won’t get into. =P

I always recommend seeing a well-regarded professional about stuff like this. If you do end up going to someone, don’t tell them that you have AS - tell them what’s up, and they’ll determine whether you have AS.

Most of all, be confident. The worst thing you can do is not be yourself because you’re afraid of a label. If you’re genuine with your personality and behavior, then you will transcend and eradicate stereotypes and labels without even realizing it.

I hope I’ve not been too abstract for you, and hope you had a merry Christmas if you celebrate it!

If you’ve ever seen Mozart and the Whale, you’ll appreciate that some individuals may be highly intelligent but have some difficulties with the emotional and social aspects of their life. Doesn’t mean they can’t have those things: they just have to work harder at it. An informative yet touching article.

Hi, I haven't been diagnosed, nor do I think I am an Aspie (I go to a therapist, I'd think they would have mentioned something). I can, however, relate to most (read: all) things on this blog. I find myself frequently frustrated with simple imperfections, or lost in things everyone else seems able to function in, etc. I haven't done a lot of research, but is there, like, a tipping point? The line between relating to and actually being an Aspie?

I maintain that the only way to know for sure is to get diagnosed by a professional who’s trained to know what’s up with your mind.

Hey Dylan. I know some aspies can't handle wearing clothes very well because of the feeling of the fabric etc. For me, it's not the clothing: I can't stand the feeling of my bed sheets rubbing against my bare feet. I ALWAYS wear socks to bed lol, my parents think it's kind of strange and/or something the elderly do xD but I was wondering if I am the only one who feels like this.. anyone out there who feels the same?

I’m the opposite - I cannot wear anything on my feet when I sleep. I don’t get how people wear socks/slippers while they sleep. The thought just makes my skin crawl.

So, My older brother is 17 and he is an Aspie. As his younger sister, its been really difficult with me to fully understand his Aspergers, and I have been looking for resources on the internet to help to understand it, because thats all my brother really wants; someone who understands and accepts him. I APPRECIATE YOUR BLOG! I'm pretty new to tumblr, and finding your blog has made my day! All of your posts are so relevant. I appreciate people like you!

Yay :D

I would correct one part of your language, though – you shouldn’t try to understand his AS, but try to understand HIM as a person.

Have a suggestion?

I am one person. I have but a single man’s experience of the autism spectrum. Please, share your insights about the little things that make Aspies who they are.
